The New Oxford Dictionary of English
Oxford asks you to save the blatherskite! Lexicographers from the New
Oxford Dictionary of English have picked out some wonderful words that
they believe are little used and should be brought back to prominence.
They have been collected together to form the Dictionary of Weird and
Wonderful Words. With the help of the dictionary you could become a
deipnosophist! That's a person skilled in the art of dinner-table
conversation, to you and me. Or are you a blatherskite, a dandiprat, or
a doryphore? In plain English someone who talks nonsense, a young
insignificant person, and someone who is critical of others in an
annoyingly pedantic way, respectively. From aa to Zyrian, the first and
last words of the Oxford English Dictionary, these are words that make
language more fun. Angus Stevenson, Project Editor for English
Dictionaries, said:
We know that people love unusual words, and so do we: researching
definitions of weird and wonderful words such as these is one of the
things that makes our job here enjoyable. We hope that these words are
picked up and used more frequently.

After all, why use weird when you could use unheimlich? Wowser (the
catchphrase of Inspector Gadget) is a great alternative to describing
someone as prudish, and snollygoster is a wonderful term for a shrewd or
unprincipled person.

The dictionary also contains many weird and wonderful terms for body parts.
Do you know your hallux from your oxter (your big toe and your armpit)?
Or that a weasand is the Old English word for the oesophagus? A boil can
also be called a furuncle, and otalgia is another name for earache.

Most people have heard of arachnophobia but if you don't practise zoolatry
(worship of animals) there are plenty more phobias out there: ailurophobia
is extreme fear of cats, while those scared of dogs are cynophobic.

And if that all leaves you feeling a bit wabbit (exhausted), don't be too
atrabilious (bad-tempered): perhaps you could relax by becoming a
winebibber (a person who drinks a lot of alcohol).
